TST National ISVA Conference
Thursday 22 September 2011
Delivering Outcomes: ISVAs at work
This is the FIRST National Conference - focusing on issues related to the delivery of effective ISVA Services.
We hope you can attend !
Times: Registration 9.30, Start at 10am, Finish at 4.30pm
Where: Dunchurch Park Hotel, Dunchurch Park, Rugby, Warwickshire CV22 6QW www.signaturegroup.co.uk
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE: The role of the ISVA Service ISVAs are independent victim-focused advocates. Their role is distinct from that of the crisis worker or counsellor. Wherever they are based, or whoever they are employed by, their primary responsibility is to provide support and impartial advice to their client on their options, and advocate on their behalf when required.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This conference will benefit anyone who works as an ISVA, is an ISVA Service Manager, or is an agency that commissions or hosts an ISVA Service. It will also be useful for other professionals who are part of the multi-agency working arena that ISVA Service work within, when working on behalf of clients i.e. health, housing, social care, police, youth advisory services, child protection leads/agencies, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors working within the statutory and non-statutory sector.
EVENT ORGANISERS: TST - a national umbrella organisation for over 130 specialist voluntary sector agencies providing a range of counselling, therapeutic and support services working with women, men and children who are victims/survivors of rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse.
For more information on this event email: sarah.cheadle@thesurvivorstrust.org Phone: 01788 550554 ABOUT THE KEYNOTE PRESENTERS Keynote presenters include those from frontline services, through to government officials, and include:
Home Office The government has funded a large number of ISVA positions for several years and have a keen interest in not only how they are developing, but also how effective they are. Their presentation will be: "The View from the Home Office"
Skills for Justice ( www.skillsforjustice.com ) The government is investing in the development of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for a number of work streams. Currently Skills for Justice are working on developing a NOS for ISVA work stream. Emma Dove & Tina Parker will be updating delegates on this process; and seeking their views/contributions throughout the conference. Their session is : ‘Providing independent sexual violence advice & advocacy - Developing standards to deliver strong outcomes'
Rights of Women (www.rightsofwomen.org.uk ) Rights of Women is a women's voluntary organisation committed to informing, educating and empowering women concerning their legal rights. They have recently updated and republished a core document which empowers ANY victim who is working their way through the somewhat complex question of "should I report a crime; and what happens when I do?" The handbook ‘From Report To Court' is an essential tool for any ISVA who is supporting a client and we are delighted that RoW is able to present at the conference.
ISVA - from the Manager's Perspective Managing an ISVA Service is an important and crucial role and includes the need to not only case manage including monitoring the effectiveness of the service (for commissioners); but also to provide appropriate care and support for ISVAs team members.
ISVA - from the ISVA's Perspective Managing a client's expectations and rights is complex. Add to that the emotional content and the different interpretations that the word ‘justice' can evoke - is both rewarding; and a roller coaster for the ISVA - and the client.
More to come!

The Survivors Trust facilitated a National Seminar in London on 30th June 2008, giving Independent Sexual Violence Advisers (ISVAs) and Advocacy Workers a valuable opportunity to meet and share experiences of their roles.
The feedback and discussions during the day have produced a Report full of excellent information and comment, which has now been presented to the National Stakeholder Advisory Group on Sexual Violence and Abuse. The Stakeholder Advisory Group is Chaired by Vernon Coaker, Under-secretary of State for Victims and Ann Keen, Under-secretary of State for Health. The Group is also attended by all key stakeholders working with sexual violence and abuse issues.
